Sanapia: the meaning and values behind the name

What or who is Sanapia?

The name Sanapia comes from and is in remembrance of Mary Poafpybelly Spring, born 20th of May 1895 to January 1984). Mary was given the name Sanapia as a Comanche medicine woman and spiritual healer. She is believed to be the last of eagle doctors, a Comanche title referring to a person with eagle medicine for healing the sick. She was influenced by traditional Comanche medicine, incorporating elements of Christianity and Peyotism.

Sanapia Community is named in honor and reference of Mary Poafillby, both in her service to her tribe, her care for others, and her steadfast belief in healing.
